Dataset
Description:
A Longitudinal dataset (also known as the Banks Cross-National Time-Series after its creator Arthur S. Banks) This data collection has 194 variables covering economic, political and demographic statistics for over 200 nations. The Cross-National Time-Series (CNTS) Data Archive provides ranges of annual data from 1815 to the present for all countries for many variables of use to the social scientist researcher. Examples of economic variables include gross national product (GNP), government revenues and expenditures, foreign aid, imports and exports per capita, proportion of world trade, military and educational expenditures as percentage of the GNP, energy, electric, steel, and cement production and consumption per capita, and the percentage of the workforce in industry and in agriculture. Data on political systems include type of regime, effectiveness of the executive and legislative branches, size of the legislature, democratic performance, press, political and civil freedoms, major constitutional and cabinet changes, legislative elections, and dates of independence. Population characteristic variables include population density, urbanisation index, size of the military as proportion of the adult population, and infant mortality rate as proportion of births. Other demographic variables include ethnicity, literacy, and languages.
