  • Description: Founded in 1947, the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research is the leading educational facility in the field of public opinion. The Center exists to promote the intelligent, responsible and imaginative use of public opinion in addressing the problems faced by Americans and citizens of other nations. In an increasingly complex and interdependent global environment, the Roper Center hopes to foster increased international understanding and to promote cross-national research. Two basic forms of data are available: overall distributions (also known as marginals) and information on individuals. Distributions: iPOLL is a database containing the exact wording and percentage distribution of responses for over 400,000 survey questions asked in the United States . It starts with the beginnings of modern opinion polling in the 1930s and continues to the present. The database is constantly updated, and survey results are usually available in iPOLL within a few weeks of their release. For more information on using iPOLL, see the user guide at http://roperweb.ropercenter.uconn.edu/iPOLL/UserGuide.pdf Individual data: The Roper Center holds over 10,000 data sets which researchers can use to conduct their own analysis. The holdings include well-known data sets such as the General Social Survey , the Social Capital Community Benchmark Surveys , and exit polls for Presidential elections from 1976 onwards. Some of the data are from academic organizations, including series from the NORC , Columbia University 's Bureau of Applied Social Research, and the Harvard School of Public Health , and others are from commercial polling agencies such as the Gallup Organization. International data:the Roper Center has substantial international holdings, some dating back to the 1940s and 1950s. Some codebooks remain in original language, but many have been translated into English. JPOLL , which is modelled on iPOLL, provides a comprehensive database of survey questions and responses for in Japan during the 1990s. The Roper Center is now focusing on data from the United States and multi-national surveys, since other data archives have been established in countries around the world.
