  • Description: The OED online contains two databases: the second edition and the new edition which is still being compiled. Results from searches are therefore presented in two sets: one from the second edition (plus additions) and one from the new (3rd) edition results. Updates are added every quarter. Searching is either by quick search (which looks at the main entries for the word) or by full text which looks for any occurrence of your word in the complete text of the dictionary (in definitions, quotations, etc.). Proximity and phrase searching is supported. Results are given in a numbered order, 2nd edition results first. Abbreviations are used to denote the different types of use of a word (eg 'n' for noun, 'v' for verb). Tutorial searches are available as are help screens (overview of the OED, how to search, view, print/e-mail results, abbreviations list).
